Delivering detailed remeasurement and contract support across a complex magnetite project.
The Fortescue Iron Bridge Magnetite Project is a US$4 billion mining operation in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, developed by Fortescue Metals Group. Unlike Fortescue’s existing operations which mine hematite ore that is simply crushed and shipped, Iron Bridge represents a major strategic shift into magnetite.
The key differentiator is the processing: magnetite requires extensive beneficiation to create a high-grade (~67% Fe), premium product called Magnetite Concentrate. The project includes a massive processing plant, a 135 km slurry pipeline to transport the concentrate to the coast, and a new dedicated storage and ship loading facility at Port Hedland.
First production was achieved in 2023. Iron Bridge is crucial for Fortescue’s future, allowing it to produce a higher-value product to blend with its lower-grade ores and meet the evolving demands of the global steel industry, which is increasingly focused on efficiency and reducing emissions.

To manage the complexity, ProfitPays broke down the packages into discreet tasks for the ProfitPays team to drive the remeasurements to a timely conclusion. Works were peer reviewed by the team lead and presented to Fortescue on conclusion of the exercise.
ProfitPays facilitated negotations with the Contractor on key “pain points” around new rates. The process enabled Fortescue and the Contractor to reach a mutual alignment on the measured works and associated pricing.

Detailed Measurements
Through precise 2D & 5D measurement, ProfitPays developed detailed measurement schedules that enabled accurate review of IFC design documentation. This process provided the backbone for developing variations on the Contractors scope of works
Contract Pricing and Proposed Variation Rate Assessments
ProfitPays Cost Management team provided detailed cost analysis of the measured works and Contract pricing schedules. ProfitPays benchmarked the proposed Variation rates against the market rates and outliers were flagged by ProfitPays for further review.
Core Team Support
By outsourcing key areas of complex measurement and variation rate assessment to ProfitPays. Fortescue was able to keep their core Contracts team focused on the daily administrative tasks of the project. This created a more supportive environment for the project team and provided a neutral conduit for Fortescue and the Contractors to negotiate complex variations.
